These handlooms are curiously woven by the connoisseurs and are well-famed for its fine, airy, light in weight and transparent textures.
These sarees are made with outstanding weaving works by the experts. Bengal is the best maker of assortment of cotton handlooms such as Tant, Ikkat, Kantha, Jamdhani, Ganga jamuna and Baluchari sarees etc.
These Handlooms are eminently woven with plain borders, colourful fancy artistic designs, hand woven bootis and printed motifs.
Originally, these styles of handlooms have their root in Bangladesh. Later, they are especially woven in Shantipur, Gobar Char, Dhaniakhali, Murshidabad, Nadia, Hooghly and other places of West Bengal after the partition of India. But they have a richest history in the time of Mughal dynasty.
Under the patronage of Mughal rulers, the weavers flourished these sarees in and around Dhaka. Later, in the late 18th century, British emperor tried to destroy this art, but the weavers made it impossible.
The interesting point is, in Dhaniakhali, every house itself contains at least one loom and they weave their sarees by own.Weaving style of Bengal Cottons is legendary. It uses age old crafting methods of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
Experts firstly weave pure cotton threads. To produce cotton, they prepare warp and wefting. Before weaving, shining threads are immersed in dyeing. They use natural looms and shuttles for weaving. Here in this process, two shuttles are used to weave the fabric.
The theme of this saree is characterized by a thick border and decorative pallu. The motifs such as floral, artistic, stones, zari, bootis are used and printed motifs such as flowers, peacocks, birds, animals and other geometrical shapes are designed intricately.
The weaving and dyeing craft of West Bengal is followed by different towns of India such as Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Tanda, Varanasi, Karnataka, Gadwal and Coimbatore etc.
