The Kerala Cotton Sari has evolved from the Mundum Neriyathum, the traditional attire of women in the South Indian state of Kerala. In fact the Mundum Neriyathum can be said to have influenced the creation of the modern Saree.

The pichhwais (cloth back Drops of Shrines) of Rajasthan and Gujarat are kalamkari. This are particularly painted cloth used as decorations for the shrines of Krishna in his appearance as Srinathji in Rajasthan.

The actual kalamkari technique is very complicated and time consuming. In some reasons it is taken several days to produce a cloth and in others several weeks. The results are that both sides of the sarees look exactly alike as if it is printed on both sides with the same design.
